For example if you need to setup a database for your plugin to run correctly you don't want to check if the database is setup everytime the plugin is ran. You want the database to be setup when the plugin is activated, that way you know that the database will be there when your plugin is running.

I stumbled across this Github project called keep-in-view.js which uses a small bit of Javascript to make sure an element is always on the screen. Keep in view will make sure the elements don't scroll off the page by making them stick to the top or the bottom of the page.

A post featured image was introduced in WordPress version 2.9, it is a thumbnail that can be set to the post as a featured image of your post. It will not be displayed on the page but it's up to the WordPress theme to decide when to display it.
