To be honest this method isn't efficient. You should design the pencil standing straight up lying down, therefore you can use an angle like 90 or 180 for the gradient overlay .. :)

I think you should illustrate each part a little bit better.

The way the tutorial is displayed could do with some work - the screenshots of Photoshop are all full size, it'll kill some peoples internet connections.

This is a nice tutorial for sure, but you need to point out the page numbers more clearly, as it was hard for me to find them amidst all of the other stuff.
