The drone allowed the crew to take aerial footage from across Los Angeles without the expense of using an actual helicopter. They just mounted a GoPro onto the quadcopter and flew the camera above the city. With the help of a video transmitter on the Phantom drone, a live feed of the GoPro footage was sent to a monitor on the ground to help the photographers compose the shots.

An international collective consisting of Europe, Japan, and the US is responsible for the work ALMA is doing and, though its official launch was just a year ago at the time of writing, the images that are being made have already given astronomers and scientists new information to study. Even with only 16 antennas in working order, the scientists have been able to view new stars being formed in over 26 galaxies that averaged over 11.7 billion light-years away.

The resulting photograph raised some questions about the pursuit of perfection. There was a technical issue, as the automatic focus of the camera had nothing to work on, and so the camera didn’t want to shoot. I was in a hurry, so I took the easy way out and included a piece of roof in the picture, which I later cropped out, otherwise I would have needed to resort to full manual mode.
