Today we are going to build the second most common site menu navigation, the vertical navigation menu. Here we are going to be using only pure CSS, no hacks, and unordered lists to create our vertical menu and three levels of pop outs. The pseudo: hover class is most commonly used to hide and display content or change element styles based on user hover interaction with elements on a web site. The problem is that CSS pseudo hover class is from CSS2 and not CSS1 leaving IE5 and IE6 out in the cold. Here we will fix this issue and bring the pseudo hover class to these lackey browsers.

Have you ever tried to add padding to <li> elements that have been set to “display: inline”? Did you find that the padding seemed to be rendering in an unusual way? In the example below, the <li> elements have been set to “display: inline”, and then 1em of padding has applied to all sides. Unfortunately, the padding on the top and bottom of the <li> elements seems to have been ignored causing the elements to overlap each other
