In this tutorial, I will explain how to give a button animation on rollover by creating a button as a movie clip symbol and using a mask effect.

oburiana, the mask effect is the white gradient going across the button. If you look at the demo of stage 1, you'll see that the white rollover effect is seen on top of the buttons above the one you mouse over. The mask effect makes it so the light effect only is displayed on top of the one button.
